Keum Boo is an ancient (11th century) Asian design technique. Thin sheets of pure gold are attached to fine silver through a diffusion bond (which is an atom exchange at the interface of the two metals). Heat (900-1,000º F) and pressure accelerate this permanent bonding.
Fine silver is annealed and pickled. I mill pure gold (24K) to 30 micron foil in a rolling mill. The gold is then cut into desired shapes and bonded onto the silver. The pieces are then roll printed, shaped, dapped, and finished. Some pieces are oxidized. Lastly, ear wires and embellishments are attached. |
